Outage: keep the fridge running for 24 hours
Which portable power stations can keep a refrigerator, a few LED lights and a phone going through a full day without power, worked out from ENERGY STAR and published specs.
The loads
Scenario inputs, not measurements: the fridge runs all day at its ENERGY STAR average draw, three LED bulbs are on for 6 hours, and one phone charges for 3 hours. Change any of these in the calculator.
| Appliance | Watts used | Hours on | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 x Refrigerator | 52 W average[4] | 24 of 24 | 1,248 Wh |
| 3 x LED light bulb | 8.8 W high end[5] | 6 of 24 | 158 Wh |
| 1 x Phone charger | 20 W high end[6][7] | 3 of 24 | 60 Wh |
Everything on at once draws up to 771 W running, and 2,246 to 2,946 W for the moment a motor starts, using each appliance's highest sourced figure.
How each station does
Lasts = usable Wh / average load over the 24 hours. Usable Wh = battery Wh x efficiency.

A fridge is the first thing most people want running in an outage, and it is a good fit for a power station because it draws little on average. The compressor cycles on and off, so over a day a modern fridge uses far less than its running watts suggest. That is why this page uses the ENERGY STAR average draw for the fridge's energy, while the running and starting watts decide whether the station can start and run it at all.
The table shows each station's battery, whether its rated output and surge cover everything switched on at once, and how long the battery lasts at this day's average load. "Full 24 h" means the usable energy covers the whole day on one charge. Stations under that line can still help: run the fridge for part of the day and keep the door shut, or recharge from solar.
Older fridges, side-by-side models and fridges with ice makers use more. If you know your fridge's annual kWh from its yellow EnergyGuide label, divide it by 8.76 to get its average watts and put that in the calculator.
Runtime calculator
Runtime (hours) = battery Wh x inverter efficiency / load W
Efficiency is the share of battery energy that reaches the outlet. Where the maker does not publish it we use 0.85. Average W is for loads that cycle on and off, like a fridge; leave it blank to use running watts. Starting surge assumes one motor starts at a time. How the estimates work.
